Abstract

307,990. Stone & Co., Ltd., J., and Hatcher, E. C. Dec. 21, 1927. Movements of vehicles, utilizing.-In toothed, chain, or similar positive gearing for transmitting power from the running axles of a railway or like vehicle to a dynamo, compressor, or other piece of apparatus, undue strain on the gearing when the axle is strongly braked is prevented by the provision of a centrifugal clutch associated with the shaft of the dynamo or other machine so that the latter may be allowed to over-run the axle when the speed of the latter falls rapidly. The invention is described in connection with a toothed gearing in which the gearwheel immediately associated with the axle is not directly conectned thereto but is constituted as a hollow cylinder surrounding but spaced from the axle and connected to the latter by a flexible or universal coupling so that axial or other movements of the axle do not affect the correct meshing of the gears. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the gear-wheel f is adapted to drive a quick pitch worm e and is combined with a sleeve f<1> spaced from the axle a and provided with forked extensions m serving to couple the sleeve to the axle. This coupling, Fig. 2, comprises two unequal half-rings n, n<1> embracing the axle a, the larger ring n<1> being provided with pins p rotatable in sockets r in a gimbal-ring q having pins s capable of axial and rotary movements in the forks m. The driven member e is rotatably mounted on an extension d<2> of the dynamo shaft d and is provided with centrifugally-acting shoes co-operating with the internal surface of a brake drum k fixed to the shaft extension d<2>. Modifications are described in which the gear-wheel f meshes with an idle spur-wheel driving a second spur-wheel associated with the dynamo &c. shaft, and in which the heads of the pivot pins p, s either slide in slots in the members they engage or have spherical heads movable in tubular portions thereof.
