Thermionic amplifiers.-Hum is eliminated from a thermionic amplifier supplied with current from a fluctuating source, by applying the ripple voltage in opposite phase to the grid and the plate, and in such amplitude as to balance out in its effect on the plate current. Filament voltage for the valve 4 is taken from adjacent tappings 12 on the resistance 2 connected across the supply source 1. Plate voltage is taken from a tapping 8 on the positive side of the filament taps, and grid bias is taken from a tap 21 through a high resistance 20. Ripple voltage is applied to the grid from a tapping 23 through a large condenser 22, and the tapping 23 is so chosen that the ripple voltage thus applied to the grid just neutralizes the ripple voltage applied by the tap 8 to the plate. Similar connections are made for the preceding valve 3. The ratio of the distances of the points 8, 23 from the filament tap 12 should be equal to the amplification factor of the valve.
