Abstract

304,580. Dicker, S. G. S., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Oct. 31, 1927. Divided on 304,396. Vacuum tubes.-In a process for coating a metallic or non-metallic body with osmium, the body is heated in an atmosphere containing one or more volatile carbonyl halogen compounds of osmium, preferably the chloride. In an example a wire or rod of tungsten, molybdenum, nickel or carbon is stretched in an axial direction in an exhausted vessel between two poles which pass through the wall of the glass vessel. A small quantity of osmium carbonyl chloride is placed in the vessel which is heated to under 200‹ C., the wire &c. being heated electrically to about 500‹ C. An incandescent cathode, the surface of which contains an active electron material, may have a core coated with osmium as described above, or a sheath of another material may be provided between the core and the coating of osmium.
