Abstract

280,697. Dicker, S. G. S., (Naamlooze Vennootschap Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken). Oct. 29, 1926. Vacuum tubes. - Metallic or non-metallic bodies are coated with platinum by heating the articles in an atmosphere containing a volatile platinum compound, such as carbonyl platinous chloride. A tungsten or nickel wire 2 is stretched between poles 3, 4 which are passed through the walls of an exhausted glass vessel 1 enclosed in a furnace 6, a small quantity 5 of the platinum compound being placed in the vessel 1. The vessel 1 is heated to about 100‹ C. and the wire, by the passage of current, to 600‹ C. The wire 2 may be moved slowly through the vessel, mercury seals being provided at the end through which the coated wire emerges. Incandescent cathodes may be produced by coating a core with platinum as previously described and then superficially coating the coated core with a metal oxide, preferably an alkaline earth oxide. Platinized wires may be coated with barium and oxidized as described in Specification 209,730, or the wires may be coated with copper which is oxidized, coated with barium, and oxidized as described in Specification 229,622.
