Abstract

303,274. Arcus, C. R. Jan. 5, 1928. Steam, internal-combustion, and other fluidpressure engine indicators. - Comprises a particular construction of the type in which momentary communication is established between a gauge and the engine cylinder once in every cycle by the relative rotation of a pair of ported valve plates, one of which is rotated once per cycle from the engine while the other is independently adjustable or driven at a lower speed. The casing a houses two valve discs band c of which the iormer is carried by a shaft d driven from the engine, for example the cam-shaft in the case of a four-stroke engine. The disc c is carried in a hollow shaft m the central passage o of which is connected by a passage n with a port g adapted to register with a port f in the valve disc b. The end of the shaft m away from the casing a is rotatably mounted in a header p communicating by a passage q with the engine. A normally closed inlet r permits the apparatus to be filled with liquid. The shaft m and disc c may be adjusted by a handwheel 2 through a worm gear z, x so that the parts f, g register at any particular point of the stroke so that a pressure gauge connected to the opening i may register the pressure at this point of the cycle. An indicating pointer w on the worm wheel indicates the setting. For six cylinder engines the pointer is connected to a strap which may be screwed to a sheave in one with the worm wheel at any one of six equidistant positions. In a modification fluid under engine pressure may be introduced directly to the casing a wherein the two valve members are separated by a disc having a ring of perforations with any one of which the part in the adjustable valve member may be made to register.
