Sorting on picking or sorting tables or the like. -In the hand sorting of transparent or translucent sheet material such as paper and films, the material in piles is passed over a source of light, so as to detect the presence or absence of faulty parts, the piles being accordingly colleded in separate collectors and those containing the faulty parts being then subjected to further sorting. The apparatus comprises a conveyer device c consisting of narrow bands, cords &c. which carriers the piles over a, ground-glass plate f illuminated underneath by a source of light g. Piles containing no faulty sheets are, delivered to a receiver h. On the detection of a faulty pile, a. conveyer device i consisting of bands or cords is interposed into the path of the piles and carrier them to a receiver l. The apparatus is described as associated with rolls from which a number of webs are fed by rollers b and a cutter c by which the piles of sheets are formed. Gripper devices may be used instead of cords for the conveyer device, the speed of which may be varied so as to provide as reduction of speed or pause at the inspection position and the source of light may be arranged horizontally, vertically or at an inclination, may be flat or curved, and stationary or capable of travelling. The sorting action may be repeated with piles of diminishing size. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also states that the invention may be applied to the sorting of material in web form. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
