Abstract

Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In cylinders in which the air charge is whirled, e.g. by ports 10, baffles 6 are provided in the combustion chambers to break up the charge, and direct it on to the fuel jets issuing from nozzles 4. The baffles 6 may be mounted, or formed, on the cylinder heads, or the piston faces. In a fourstroke-cycle engine, the charge is whirled by fins on poppet valves in the cylinder heads, the fuel nozzles being axially arranged in a single-acting engine. The baffles may be constituted by adjustable vanes.
