Abstract
302,464. Reed, T., (trading as Reed & Son, T. J.), a.nd Brown, J. Nov. 8, 1927. Mounting spare wheels on vehicles.-A spare wheel carrier for heavy motor-vehicles comprises a grid or frame e, Fig. 3, adapted to carry the wheel and slidably mounted on guide rails a, which are suspended beneath the rear &c. of the vehicle, as by cross bearers b and straps c secured to the chassis d, the grid e, when the wheel is to be removed, being drawn out in the manner of a drawer, and its outer end rested upon the ground, as shown in Fig. 4. The grid e comprises parallel side members connected by crossbars f, pivoted to a central one of which is an eye-bolt g adapted to project through the centre of the wheel, the boss of which is engaged by a clamping-bar h secured by a fly-nut i. Complete disengagement of the grid e from the guide rails a is prevented by a pivoted hook m adapted to drop into engagement with the outer cross bearer b. In the normal position, the outer end of the grid e is secured to the outer ends of the rails a by detachable bolts.
