Mounting spare wheels and tyres on vehicles.- A carrier adapted normally to support one or more spare wheels or tyres .at the rear of the vehicle in a substantially vertical position, but adapted also to carry them in a horizontal position when luggage is being carried, comprises one or more vertical receptacles with openings at the top, and one or more horizontal receptacles with openings at the rear and intersecting the vertical receptacles. Two brackets C are secured, one to each dumb iron B, and support a U-shaped member D, and upwardly-projecting members E, G riveted to a horizontal member F at each side, the members F being connected by a transverse member H. A member J passes across in front of the wheel W when in the vertical position, and serves also as a guard to protect the vehicle body from luggage when placed upon a grill L, which in the operative position is turned down about pivots M on the members E to the horizontal position shown at L<1>. The horizontal receptacle comprises a U-shaped transverse strip N secured to the dumb irons B, and a central longitudinal strip 0 secured to the member N and to an angle member Q on the chassis. The wheel W is secured in either receptacle by means of two straps a, each of which is attached to the member H or other part and is passed around a spoke. An additional vertical receptacle for a second wheel X is formed by side members R secured to the member H, a transverse member K, and a U-shaped member S connected to the member D by struts T. A member U forms the front of an additional horizontal receptacle. When a single wheel is carried, the members forming the additional receptacles may be detached.
