Abstract
301,848. General Electric Co., Ltd., and Kahn, M. July 7, 1927. Alternating-current motors.-In an alternating- current synchronous motor starting as an induction motor and having on the secondary member a squirrel-cage winding and a slot-wound exciting winding adapted to be fed with continuous current from an external source, the exciting winding is arranged in a separate set of slots at a distance below the squirrel-cage winding so that at starting the exciting winding is shielded from alternating flux and therefore may be connected to the continuous-current supply throughout the starting operation. The squirrel-cage winding, which is of high resistance and low reactance, is located in slots 6 near the periphery of the rotor and the exciting winding is introduced into the lower slots 7 through radial slits 8. Some of the slots 7 in the centre of each pole may be unwound, and the exciting winding may have one-half and one-third the number of slots of the squirrel-cage winding. At starting, the primary winding may be connected to the mains through an auto-transformer.
