Abstract

546,594. Exciting alternating-current machines. WALLOF, A. L. Nov. 14; 1940, No. 16471. [Class 35] In a polyphase dynamo-electric machine, the unidirectional excitation current is obtained by rectifying an alternating current by a set of commutators rotated by the machine. The alternating current may be obtained from windings inductively associated with the main windings. In the motor shown in Fig. 1 the stator is provided with main windings 31, 32, 33 lap wound with four coils in series to each phase, two slots to each coil and alternate coils wound in opposite senses, Fig. 3 (not shown). An identical set of stator windings 91, 92, 93 in the same slots supply three-phase current to brushes 97a, 98a, 99a engaging commutators 82, 82, 83 each in four segments with opposite segments joined. One field winding 10, 11, 12 for each phase is wound on each of four rotor poles, similar windings being joined in series to adjacent segments of corresponding commutators. A further set of brushes 97b, 98b, 99b phased 180 degrees from the first set are delta-connected through phasebalancing resistors 311. The rotor is provided with squirrel-cage bars 14 ... 17 for starting; when the motor is running synchronously the commutators supply direct current to the rotor field windings. The application to quarter-phase motors is also described.
