298,279. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 11, 1927. 1 : 4-Diaminoanthraquinones. - 1 : 4-Diaminoanthraquinone, its homologues and derivatives, including alkylamino and hydroarylamino derivatives, are obtained in the form of the free bases by oxidation of the corresponding leuco-bases with a substance yielding oxygen in presence of a catalyst having an acid or basic reaction, such as triethylamine, piperidine, thionyl chloride, benzovl chloride and the like. Where an acid is employed, its nature and the amount used are such that no substantial quantity of a salt of the leuco-base is formed. In examples, leuco-1:4- diaminoanthraquinone is oxidized by nitrobenzene in the presence of a little thionyl chloride, giving 1 : 4-diaminoanthraquinone : and leuco-1 : 4-diamino-5 : 8-dihydroxyanthraquinone is oxidized by nitrobenzene in presence of a trace of piperidine. The use of a solvent such as trichlorbenzene, with the addition of the requisite quantity of nitrobenzene for effecting oxidation, is also mentioned.
