Abstract
298,244. Soc. Italiana E. Breda, (Assignees of Scaglia, G.). Oct. 7, 1927, [Convention date]. Addition to 272,221. Projectiles; fuzes.-Relates to bombs intended to be thrown by hand or by firearms and comprising an explosive bursting charge 8<1> mounted against a concave seat in the end of the outer shell 27 and a firing pin 6 mounted by a universal joint at the other end of the shell, these two parts being kept apart, until impact by a spring 10<1>, and impact being adapted to cause the firing pin to fire a percussion cap 9 and explode a detonator 21, as described in the parent Specification. According to the invention, the firing pin 6 is so mounted that it can move longitudinally relatively to the universal joint. In Fig. 1, the firing pin 6 is secured in a tube 31, which slides in a sleeve 29 provided with a pair of spherical flanges 30 forming a universal joint with the spherical end 28 of the shell. This joint is covered by a hood 33 and the upward movement of the tube 31 is limited by its abutment against that hood or by the abutment of a flange 32 on the tube against the sleeve 29. The parts are held in safety position by a transverse bolt 22 hinged to a cap 23 adapted to become detached during flight, but locked in place before use by a safety-pin 24 provided with a finger ring for its removal. In a modification, the end 28 of the shell is closed, and the universal joint consists of a spherical surface on the tube 31 abutting against a spherical surface in the closed end 28 of the casing.
