Abstract

Folding mangles and wringer,3.-In a folding mangle &c. with or without mechanical raising and lowering arrangements, frictional means are provided to retard the lowering but not to interiere with the raising of the turnover frame. As shown, in a machine in which a pinion on the lower roller shaft engages a stationary segmental rack C during the raising and lowering of the turnover frame B, a ratchet wheel E is loosely mounted around the turnover shaft F and is driven during lowering by a. pawl H carried by the turnover frame and running idly over the ratchet wheel during raising. Friction elements e<2> project from both faces of the ratchet wheel and are engaged by adjustable spring pressed plates e, e<1> secured on the turnover shaft. In modifications the friction elements may comprise co-operating friction cones carried by the turnover and stationary frames respectively, or either frame may be provided with a brake drum, a coacting strap or an internal or external brake block or shoe being carried by the other frame.
