Abstract

296,022. Schmidt, F. L. Aug. 23, 1927, [Convention date]. Calcium phosphate; magnesium carbonate; double salts.-A mineral phosphate is rendered citrate soluble by roasting say at 800-1300‹ C. with potassium carbonate obtained from potassium magnesium bicarbonate. Decomposition of the double salt is effected in known manner by warming its aqueous suspension to 80‹ C. or by treating it at 40‹ C. with magnesium oxide or hydroxide, the magnesium carbonate thereby recovered being used in the production of further quantities of the double salt. Preferably the finely divided phosphate is admixed with a concentrated, say a 50 per cent, solution of the carbonate to form a paste, which is then roasted. The double salt may be produced by adding magnesium carbonate, it may be in paste form, to a concentrated solution of potassium chloride, and subjecting the mixture to the action of gases containing carbon dioxide, for instance those produced by the roasting operation.
