Dropping bombs.-Relates to bomb-dropping gear released by an explosive cartridge situated in a cylinder and operating a piston, and' consists in the arrangement of the cartridge, cylinder, and piston as a single detachable unit. As shown in Fig. 1, the gear comprises in known way a pair of jaws 17, 18, interconnected by teeth 19 and controlled by a catch member 14 for holding and releasing a bomb 22. The catch member 14, which is pivoted at 15, bears against the detachable cartridge unit, which has a cylindrical body 1 and an extension 2. and is secured to the frame 8 by means of a cage 9 and an end cap 13. The cylindrical part 1 of the cartridge contains an explosive charge 4, Fig. 2, confined by wads 5 in an insulating thimble 3, and fitted with an electric fuze 23, the leads 24 of which connect with other leads 25 passing through the cap 13. A piston 7 bears against one of the wads 5 and is guided in the outer end of the extension 2. This piston 7 is pushed out, when the cartridge is fired, and deflects the catch 14 to release the bomb. Instead of the external copper gauze chambers or cages previously used for extinguishing the flame of the gases escaping from large holes in the cartridge chamber, the present cartridge is made with narrow outlets 26, which serve the same purpose. Two slightly different modifications of the construction of the cartridge are described.
