Abstract
295,775. Turner, A. May 30, 1927. Bodies, felting and planking. -The machine has three superimposed pairs of curved frames b carrying the planking rollers, the curves being approximately about a common centre. The upper rollers are smaller than those below. To vary the distance between the frames; the upper rollers are raised, the topmost series being moved twice the distance through which the middle row are moved. To move the rollers endwise as they rotate, an adjustable eccentric is con. nected by links and levers with the frames, the middle frame moving in the opposite direction to the others. The upper and middle frames are carried by rods c screwed to engage internal threads or skew gears d simultaneously operated by a hand-wheel g for varying, the roller pressure: The middle rollers are driven in one direction and the others in the opposite direction by chains passing above and below a sprocket wheel j and engaging the under sides of sprocket wheels on the rollers. The adjustable eccentric comprises a hub r, Fig. 7, keyed to the power shaft m and formed with an eccentric boss r<1>. A sleeve t is provided with an eccentric recess fitting the boss r<1>, and the sleeve and boss are turned relatively to adjust the eccentric and then clamped together. The sleeve t carries the eccentric strap n by roller bearings. The strap n has three spaced lugs o, Fig. 3, connected to the frames b by links and levers, the whole being so arranged that the central frame reciprocates oppositely to the other two and through approixmately the same distance. The rollers may be of wood, or of metal covered by rubber in sleeve or ring form. Alternatively, rope may be closely coiled around the rollers, the ends being passed through holes in end caps and clamped by staggered bolts. The hat bodies are fed from a table w between the middle and lower sets of rollers, and guided by a plate x to between the middle and upper sets. Hot planking liquid saturates the bodies as they pass . through the machine.
