Abstract

Bodies, felting and planking.-In a planking machine of the "barrel-twisting" type, that is, wherein a number of planking rollers are arranged in a barrel-like container with their axes substantially parallel to each other but inclined to the axis of the barrel, the ends of the rollers are mounted in self-aligning spherical bearings and means are provided for clamping the bearings in the position which they take. As shown, the machine comprises a cylindrical vessel a having at one end a plate e secured by bolts f engaging slots allowing slight rotary movement of the plate on loosening of the bolts. The plate has an inlet opening k for the hat bodies to be treated, and four openings shaped to engage spherical bearings i<1>, Fig. 2, in which the ends of the rollers i rotate. After adjustment of the cover e the spherical outer part i<1> of each bearing may be clamped by a plate j bolted to the cover e. The rollers are arranged in twisted relation, that is, the bearings of one side roller are at the top of one end plate and at the bottom of the other, respectively. The rollers are driven by sprocket wheels and an endless chain. At the outlet end of the apparatus the lower bearings may be constructed as universal points m, o. A pump driven from the power shaft co-operates with inlet and outlet pipes connected to upper and lower parts of the cylinder a to circulate liquid.
