Abstract

This invention consists of a horizontally disposed metal drum in the top of which water is piped under pressure through one or more nozzles. A horizontally disposed paddle wheel is located within the drum which is provided with end plates. The paddle wheel is rotated by an electric motor as smoke, from any desired type of burner or furnace, is piped horizontally into one end of the drum where the smoke disappears on mixing with the churned water. Two or more of the aforesaid drums can be connected end to end depending on the amount of smoke to be eliminated. The paddle wheel of each drum is driven by a separate electric motor, while the smoke from the first drum will be fed on into the second drum and so on until all of the smoke disappears. The water is drained from the opposite and lower end of each drum from which the smoke enters the drum.

a device for eliminating smoke; still more particularly, to a device that consists of one or more units of the just described structure in which smoke is forced from a burner or furnace. The invention is particularly useful for eliminating smoke from a burner in which is placed roofing papenlinoleum, and
the like whose burning creates a heavy black smoke that pollutes the air.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide a smoke eliminator of the character herein described that can be connected to the smoke pipe of any burner or furnace from which it is desired to eliminate the smoke.
Another object of this invention is to provide a smoke eliminator having-a minimum number of parts and therefore reduce both the original and operating cost of the eliminator.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a smoke eliminator of the character herein described that can be '1 manufactured in any size for any industrial plant having a smoke eliminating problem.
' Other and further, objects and advantages of this invention 'will no doubt appear as the reading of this specification and its Directing ones attention to FIG. 2 of the accompanying drawing it will be seen that this FlG. illustratcsone of the units that go to make up this invention when the invention cmbodies two or more units. Each unit 5 consists of a steel horizontally disposed drum 6 having end plates 7 and 8. Two spaced spray nozzles 9 are located in the top side 10 of the aforesaid drum 6. Each spray nozzle 9 is connected to a vertically disposed water pipe ll that has its upper end secured to a horizontally disposed water feed pipe 12 which in turn is connected to any desired source of water that is under pressure. A paddle wheel [3 is horizontally mounted within the aforesaid drum 6. The paddle wheel consists of a plurality of equally spaced and radially disposed paddles 14 that extend outward from the shaft 15 which has its ends projecting through bearings 16. There is one bearing [6 in the center of the aforesaid end plate 7 and a like bearing 16 in the center of the like end plate 8 of the aforesaid drum 6 of this invention. One end of the paddle wheel shaft 15 is provided with a pulley 17 around which is located the V-belt l8 that also encompasses the pulley 19 of the electric motor 20. The just described pulleys and belt, l7, l8, and 19, may be replaced by a chain or gear drive mechanism, if it is so desired.
Although not previously mentioned, it will be realized that the aforesaid steel drum 6 must be made in two sections which are bolted together after the paddle wheel 13 is placed therein.- A smoke pipe 2] has one end entering the aforesaid end plate 7 of drum 6 while the other end of the same smoke pipe is suitably connected to the burner or furnace 22, which is shown in phantom lines in FIG. 1 of the drawing. Two or more of the aforesaid cylinders 6 and their paddle-wheels and nozzles, which together form a smoke eliminating unit, indicated in its entirety by the reference number 23in the accompanying drawing, can be connected end to end by smoke pipes 24. Drain pipes 25 in the lower end of each aforesaid end plate provides a means of draining the water from the inside of each aforesaid cylinder'6.
From the foregoing it is seen that l have herein described I the construction of my invention of a smoke eliminator for industrial use. This invention completelymixes smoke coming out of a burner or furnace through a smoke (pipethat is cor tnected to one end of a horizontally dispose drum WhlCh is provided with a paddle rotated by an electric motor. The
smoke is thoroughly mixed by the paddle with a water spray, as previously described, and the smoke is thereby eliminated, as will be understood by those experienced in the art.
This invention is subject to any and all changes and/or.
modifications that one may care to make in so long as the changes and/or modifications fall within the scope and intent of the appended claims. For example, the paddle wheel 13 may be replaced by any desired air churning structure or mechanism. Any one or more of the pipes of this invention can be replaced by flexible tubes in order to reduce vibration, if it is so desired. The aforesaid drums 6 can be supported by any type 'of structure one may care to use. The same applies to the aforesaid electric motor(s) 20 of this invention.
What I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
I claim:
I. A smoke eliminator of the character described, comprising a plurality of units, each unit comprising a horizontally disposed drum having one or more water pipes adapted to provide a flow of water into the topside of the said drum through spray nozzles. the said water feed pipes being connected to a single water feed pipe through which water flows under pres sure; and -a rotating structure located inside thesaid drum adapted to churn smoke that is fed into said drum through a smoke pipe with the said water in the said drum. the rotating structure embodies a horizontally disposed shaft that has each end passing through a bearing located in the center of an end plate of said drum and a plurality of equally spaced and radially disposed paddles projecting outwardly from the said shaft, the units being arranged horizontally in end-to-end relation and adjacent units are connected by a horizontally disposed smoke pipe, and a horizontally disposed drain pipe for the water in the units, both the said smoke pipe and the drain pipe being parallel to one another.
2. The invention of claim 1 wherein the shaft of each unit is driven by its own electric motor.
