Abstract

234,968. Richmond & Chandler, Ltd., and Mitchell, E. May 3. 1924. Cleaning roots. &c. - A machine, for cleaning and removing shoots from roots, of the kind wherein spaced bars form a rotary barrel the inclination of which is adjustable, is provided with an internal beater which rotates on an axis parallel and adjustable with the barrel axis. The spaced bars 4, some of which are set inwardly and sharpened, are combined by rings 3 which rest and rotate on anti-friction rollers 5, the roller 5 adjacent to the feed hopper 22 being, with the hopper, mounted on a bracket 6 which is adjusted vertically by a screw 7. A shaft 17, journaled in a bracket 15, is driven by a chain and sprockets from the shaft 10, which carries a pinion 9 engaging with gear teeth 8 on the ring 3, and is connected by a flexible coupling 19 to a shaft 18 carried by a self-aligning bearing 16 on the bracket 6. The shaft 18 passes through the barrel 2 and carries beater bars 20 which are rotated in the opposite direction to the barrel. A discharge shoot 23 is provided.
