Abstract

Vacuum tubes.-In gasfilled rectifiers having an incandescent cathode constituted by a helically wound wire containing at least superficially a substance of high electron emission relative to tungsten, the diameter of and distance between the turns of the helix are so large that both the inner and outer surfaces of the cathode emit electrons and are covered with a discharge glow. The cathode may be coated with, or contain, active material or may be entirely of such material, for example, of hafnium. The diameter of the helix is preferably greater than 4 mm. but may be 3 mm. The cathode may comprise a helical tungsten wire 2 around which is wound helically a nickel wire, the whole being coated with barium oxide. This cathode cooperates with anodes 7, 8 separated by a screen 9 preventing discharges between the anodes. Pressures of fillings of argon and dimensions of corresponding cathodes are specified
