Straight-line motions.-A straight-line motion, suitable for embodiment in the operating mechanism of electric switches, comprises a link 2 pivoted centrally. to a radius-rod 1 and, at one end, to a second radius-rod 3, the free, end 6 being required to trace the straight line 7. The effect is obtained approximately, by. displacing the pivotal connection 9 to one side of the line joining the points 5, 6, so as to compensate for the displacement of the pivot 4 out of the line 7 and for the short radius-rod 3. By this means, in an electric switch, Fig. 1, 'the switch operating rod 28, connected to the, end 6 of the link 2, is raised and lowered without fouling the pivotal support 20 for the radius-lever 21, which is shown extended and connected, through toggles 23, 24 and a crank 26 to an actuating-rod 27. The height of the pivot 10 corresponds approximately to the upper limit position of the point 6.
