Abstract
294,538. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. July 25, 1927, [Convention date]. Joint-making packing.-In order to prevent leakage at the flange joints of refrigerating or other vacuum apparatus, two grooves are provided at the abutting surfaces, the inner groove e being supplied with the working gas and the outer groove f being maintained at a pressure slightly below atmospheric. The groove e is connected to a point in the apparatus at a pressure above atmospheric, or, if there is no pressure above atmospheric, to the point of highest pressure. In the latter case the pressure of the supply to the groove e is preferably raised by means of a compressor wheel or jet apparatus. In order to prevent leakage of air into the interior when the apparatus is at rest the volumes of the spaces in the plant are preferably so chosen that the gas pressure when the apparatus is at rest is above atmospheric.
