Leaking-preventing devices; casings.-The possible sources of leakage in a centrifugal compressor are protected by chambers in which a reduced pressure is maintained. The arrangement is applied to compressors for noxious vapours. The two units 1, 2 of a compressor for a refrigerating plant are enclosed in casings 6, 7, and are connected to an intercooler 5. A fan 12 driven with the compressor keeps the pressure in the casings 6. 7 slightly below atmosphere pressure. The casings may also enclose auxiliary apparatus such as the cooler 5. With this arrangement air may travel into the casings, but gases cannot escape from the casing into the atmosphere. All the pump units may be arranged in a single casing and its pressure reduced by an ejector or a chimney. Any stuffing boxes employed are inside the casing so that they need not be absolutely tight. Where protection against leakage between abutting flanges is to be provided, passages 19, Fig. 5, are formed in the flanges and the holes for the bolts 22 are connected to the passages 19 by subsidiary channels 23. The system of passages is connected to pressure-reducing apparatus. When ejectors are used to reduce pressure the liquid used should be one in which the gas in the compressor is soluble, to enable recovery to be effected.
