Abstract
1,037,006. Centrifugal compressors. WORTHINGTON CORPORATION. Sept. 8, 1964 [Dec. 12, 1963], No. 36716/64. Heading F1C. [Also in Division F4] A single stage centrifugal refrigerant compressor is provided with means for introducing relatively cool refrigerant vapour into the hot compressed refrigerant at a point intermediate the compressor suction and discharge sides. As shown, the compressor housing is formed with a chamber 48 which receives refrigerant vapour through an inlet 49, openings 47 being provided in the shrouded impeller 48<SP>1</SP> so that the vapour is drawn from chamber 48 and caused to mix with the rotating compressed gas stream prior to discharge from the impeller tip. The openings 47 may be provided with vanes (Fig. 6, not shown) and may be located in the rear face of the impeller (Fig. 7, not shown). In a further modification, the refrigerant vapour is introduced through inclined passages into the compressed refrigerant after the latter has been discharged from the impeller tip (Figs. 4 and 8, not shown).
