Valves, arrangement of.-In a pump 1 of a small vacuum ice-making machine, the suction valves 14, Fig. 2, in the piston 3 and the exhaust valves 10 on the cylinder cover 8 have projecting spindles as shown so that they are positively opened by the piston movement just before it reaches the ends of its stroke. A disc 13 carried by the stufting-box 12 serves as a common abutment for the exhaust valve springs. Oil to seal the stufring-box and valves is placed above the cylinder cover 8, and an oil chamber comprising two parts 16, 17 clamped together by a bolt 27 is placed between the suction pipe 20 and the cylinder. A pipe 25 extends from above the oil level in the chamber to the bottom of the cylinder, and another passage 26 leads from below the cylinder. A pipe 25 extends from above the oil provided in a partition 19 separating the chambers 16, 17 and out of alignment with the pipe 25. By this means the oil at the bottom of the cylinder acts as a sealing and non-return device, while surging of oil into the suction passage is avoided.
