Pulley-blocks. - The sheave, or sheaves, is enclosed by a housing comprising side members such as 10, 11, Fig. 1, guard-flanges such as 17 extending transversely across the ends of the housing and guards such as 18 overhanging the sheave between the guard flanges. As shown in Fig. 1, the members 10, 11 are mounted off centre on the axle 15, and the flanges 17 are contiguous. When the becket fastenings are removed, the member 10 may be turned through 180‹ so as to leave gaps between the flanges 17 at both sides of the block for removal of the rope. In modifications, the block is opened by turning one of the side housing members through 90‹, or by shifting it laterally. In another form, Fig. 4, the guard flanges 17<1> are removable, and are provided with lugs 19 which rest in notches of the housing members. In Fig. 6, housing members 23 with ends 24 forming guard flanges are hinged to one side plate 22 and fastened by bolts 30 to flanges on the opposite side plate 25. In a modification, the hinges are at the outer corners, as at A. In Fig. 9, a gap 38 for the rope is provided between guard-flanges 37 of fixed housing members 34. In a modification the gap are closed by removable plates. In a further modification, Fig. 12, the plates 34 are hinged along the upper edge at 42, and the guard flanges are near together when the block is closed. In Fig. 17, a partition plate 88 between two sheaves of the block carries oppositely-disposed tapering flanges 89, which cooperate with guard flanges 85 on the housing members, and the plate 88 may be turned on the axle 83 to open the block, the flanges 89 passing over the upper guards 87.
