SAFETY SHEAVE BLOCK.

This invention relates to new and `useful improvements in safety sheave blocks.
The object of the invention is to provide a sheave block including a housing for the cable lines having guards enclosing the said lines and for protecting thev hands vof the workmen.
A particular object ofthe invention is'to provide guard means of a stationary character having openings wide enough to permit the passage of ak cable line therethrough and movable means mounted to close said gaps.
A invention will be hereinafter described, together with other features'of the invention.v
The invention will be more readily understood from a reading of the following specifica-tion and by reference to the accompanyp ling drawings, 1n which an example of-th invention is shown and wherein:

It will be seen that the block is suspended by the upper becket and the load carried by the plate 10 and the bars 14.

By this arrangemenn'the cable lines are within the guard flanges' and the workmans hands are rprotected therefrom; however aline maybe removed .from a sheave, pulled -to the center of the housingand ont through the gaps.
A lower becket bolt 25 is passed through 'the lower ends of the parts l0, 14 and 20. kA lower becket comprisinga hook member 26l and a keeper member 27 isv hinged on the bolt on each side of the plate 10. The keeper member 27 has spaced ears 2S at its lower end secured to the upper end of the bill of the hook member' by a locking bolt 30.
vWhen. it is desired to thread the lower becket the bolt lis withdrawn and thekeeper member 27 is swung to one side. While l. have shown this vparticular form of becket together with other details, the invention is notfto be limited thereto.
For closing the gaps 22 vI provide cover strips 60. Each strip extends the length of the flanges 21' and overlaps the adjacent vertical edges on each side of the gap. The strips aremo'unted on the outer faces of the flanges andsecured by studs 61 and bolts 62. The studs engage in transverse slots 63 in the strips andv are secured to one flange,
while the bolts are inserted in the other flange. To open the block the bolts 62 are removed and the cover strips are slid to one side by reason of thel slots 63.
Various changes in the size and shape of the different parts,y as well as modifications and alterations, may vbe made within thel scope of the appended claims. i
Vhat I claim is :V
1. In a safety sheave block, a support, a sheave journaled on the support, a housing stationary on the support and having opposite restricted line gaps, and cover strips for said gaps mounted to be moved to open said gaps.
2. In a safety sheave block, a support, a sheave journaled on the support, a housing` immovably fastened 0n the support and including inwardly directed guard flanges extending transversely of the sheave, said housing having vertical line gaps contiguous to the free vertical edges of the flanges, 10 and cover strips removably fastened over the said gaps of the housing.
