Abstract
292,094. Potts, H. E., (Ternstedt Manufacturing Co.). May 11, 1928. A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, June 14, 1928]. Chromium, depositing. - The bath contains chromic chloride and a plurality of alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorides in a concentration substantially greater than could be obtained by saturation with one of such chlorides alone. A suitable bath contains 300 gms. hydrated chromic chloride in the violet modification, 250 gms. potassium chloride, 150 gms. sodium chloride, 150 gms. ammonium chloride per litre; the amounts may be increased to the (cold) saturation values. To this may be added 3-5 gms. per litre of sodium fluoride, 75-100 gms per litre of oxalic acid as a reducing agent and 1 per cent of nitric acid. Other fluorides may also be used. The anode is of chromium or of a soluble chromium compound such as ferrochrome. A voltage of 8-12 and a current density of 250-1000 amps. per sq. ft. of cathode surface are employed.
