Abstract
1437818 Electro-depositing chromium BRITISH CHROME & CHEMICALS Ltd 23 May 1974 [31 May 1973] 25984/73 Heading C7B In the electro-deposition of Cr from a bath based predominantly on Cr<SP>3+</SP> and halide, the bath is replenished during electrolysis by adding Cr<SP>6+</SP> at or near the anode at a rate such that a positive Cr<SP>6+</SP> concentration of up to 0À2 gpl (calculated as Cr) is maintained at the cathode (by which is meant as close to the cathode as Cr<SP>6+</SP> can exist but outside the surface layer of Cr<SP>2+</SP>). Replenishment may be via a water soluble compound, e.g. CrO 3 , or a soluble Cr anode. A pH below 3 may be maintained e.g. by adding HCl or H 2 SO 4 when using a Cr anode or NH 4 OH when CrO 3 is added. To prevent excess Cr<SP>6+</SP> build up either a reducing agent is added as required e.g. H 2 O 2 or, when Cr anodes are used, a mixture of Cr and inept (e.g. carbon) anodes is used. The bath may contain CrCl 3 and/ or a complex Cr halocarboxylate, the specified components being NH 4 Cl, Na Cl, B(OH) 3 and an aprotic solvent e.g. dimethyl formamide.
