Direct air-pressure apparatus, automatic.-In storage tanks or reservoirs of the kind in which the stored liquid displaces or is displaced by water, the water space communicates with a secondary chamber open to the atmosphere through an overflow, and automatic means are provided for controlling the inlet and outlet of the liquid or water. In the underground tank shown in Fig. 1, the secondary chamber 3 is constituted by the space between a bell 2 and a tank 1, and has an overflow 4 and a water inlet 14; the liquid inlet and outlet pipes 7, 6 are provided with valves 38, 39 operated by floats 41, 43. In another form, a secondary chamber 13<2>, Fig. 8, with an overflow 13<3>, communicates with the water inlet and outlet pipe 13, and a valve 29' governs the supply and discharge of water, this valve being operated from a bell 30 communicating with the space above the liquid surface 12, or from a float, diaphragm, or bellows disposed in this space. In a further form, the water inlet and outlet pipes have valves 19, 20, Fig. 9, operated by floats 23, 24 disposed in a secondary chamber 10, the float 23 having a stop to limit its upward movement and the float 24 a stop to limit its downward movement.
