Make-ready arrangements.-Make-ready sheets for printing-presses are prepared by submitting the sheet to considerable pressure in the press to obtain a sharp impression and subsequently stretching it face downwardly upon a flat plate and grinding off the raised portions of its back, a self-hardening adhesive then being sprayed upon the weak places of the sheet. A powder such as borax, dextrine, or resin may be dusted over the adhesive before it sets. The impressed sheet may be held by clamping-bars f, g upon a plate a which is adapted to be reciprocated upon guide bars c beneath an abrasive roller m adjustably mounted between pedestals n and driven at a high speed. A brush p, preferably mounted within a casing q, may be provided for removing the paper dust from the roller, the action of the brush being controlled by a hand-lever t and links r, s. Alternatively a revolving brush may be driven by the motor which drives the abrasive roller m. A handle l and a smaller handle at the other end of the plate provide means for reciprocating the latter. The adhesive liquid, for example a gum solution, may be sprayed upon the ground' face of the sheet by an atomizer, and the plate may be heated electrically to facilitate the drying of the liquid. In a modification the make-ready sheet is made of paper impregnated with. powdered iron, nickel, or other magnetizable material and the plate a is magnetized by suitably arranged exciting coils so that the makeready sheet can be held in close contact therewith without clamping it.
