Abstract

1,044,411. Printing-apparatus. MARCO Inc. Jan. 21, 1965 [April 10, 1964], No. 2761/65. Heading B6C. Rotary printing machines.-A printing device, adapted to be attached to a machine such as a trimmer 11 for removing the punched marginal material from a web 13, comprises an impression roller 17, a removable plate cylinder unit 15 including a plate cylinder 61, and a removable inking unit 16 including a forme inking roller 111. The shaft 18 of the roller 17 is positively driven by means of an endless belt, Fig. 2 (not shown), and the roller 111 and the cylinder 61 are driven from said shaft by gear means. A guide roller for the web is freely mounted on each side of the cylinder 61 on its shaft 49, each roller having a tread of rubber or felt. Cylinder tripping.-Rotation of a shaft 31 alters the printing pressure by bringing a pair of cams 32 into engagement with blocks 20 which support the bearings of the roller 17. The roller 17 is movable vertically and the blocks are biased by means of springs 39, the roller being locked in its adjusted position by a locking device, Figs. 15, 16 (not shown). Inking apparatus.-Ink is supplied to the roller 111 by a roller 95, the rubber surface of which is formed with a plurality of annular ribs 95b so dimensioned that the ink is maintained between the ribs by surface tension. Manual pressure on a housing 96 lowers the roller 95 against spring pressure into contact with the roller 111, as required, and the roller 95 may be pivoted about a shaft 97 during printing to replenish the ink supply. The roller 95 is mounted by means of a spring-loaded plunger, Fig. 9 (not shown), and may be replaced by a similar roller supplied with ink of a different colour. A roller 116 engages the periphery of the roller 111 and is axially reciprocated by means of a follower member which engages a threaded cam track on the shaft of said roller 116, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). Printing surfaces.-The cylinder 61 is secured to its shaft by a set-screw and is provided at one end with a fixed radially projecting flange and at the other with a spring-loaded collar, Fig. 7 (not shown). The signature plate 64 is retained between the flange and the collar and may be easily removed. A plurality of plates may be mounted on the same cylinder. An alignment collar is located on the cylinder shaft 49 to facilitate registration.
