Class 100(2) A rotary printing press comprises a forme inking roller in rolling contact with the printing plates and means for removing residual ink from the forme roller after an inking impression has been made between the latter and the plates, so that the forme roller is substantially free of ink prior to the feeding of ink thereto by the ink feeding device. Ink in a quantity adjustable by a blade 25, Fig. 1, is taken from a fountain roller 23 by a feed roller 24 in the form of a multi-sided polygon having flat areas defining axially extending ridges and rotating faster than the fountain roller. The roller 24 passes the ink to a forme roller 30. A series of axially reciprocating rider rollers 41-45 distribute the ink before transfer to the plate cylinder 11. Surplus ink is removed by a second series of rider rollers 31-35, the rollers 33, 34 being provided with scraper assemblies 51, 52 and surplus ink returning through a pan 71 to the trough 22. The rollers 43, 44 are provided with similar assemblies 53, 54. When the assemblies 51, 52 are operative, assemblies 53, 54 are inoperative, Fig. 4. By means of a hand-lever 94, the assemblies 53, 54 are rendered operative and the assemblies 51, 52 inoperative, for reverse rotation of the cylinder 11. Each assembly comprises a body 60, Fig. 2, mounted on stub shafts 61, and a clamping plate 62 secured thereto by cap screws 63, securing a blade 64 of tough plastic such as nylon backed by a spring steel blade 65. Set screws 66 on tightening tilt the plate 62 for secure clamping. The forme roller 30, Fig. 3, comprises layers of paper packing 84, a thin metal backing plate 82 anchored to the roller body by pins 83, and a replaceable resilient covering 80 of synthetic rubber. A gap 81 in the roller 30 invariably coincides with a gap between the plates 11a, 11b on the cylinder 11, the diameter of the roller 30 being the same as that of the cylinder 11 with the plates. All the rollers 31-35, 41-45 are axially reciprocated by pulleys such as 42a, 33a, Fig. 5, on their shafts engaged by a common wobble plate 101 on the shaft 100 of the roller 30 or separately mounted and driven. Each pulley may be in two parts spring-urged together.
