Low - pressure metallic - vapour apparatus. - In alternating-current mercury-vapour apparatus of the vacuum type with a cathode at one end and two anodes at the other, a small channel or gutter 13 is formed in the bottom of the tube, starting at the mouth of the passage 5 leading to the cathode 6 or, if no such passage is used, at the end of the cathode itself, and extending to the point where mercury returning to the anodes will divide during starting by tilting. The tube may be of U-orV- shape with the limbs close together and with anode vessels 3. 4 close together and parallel or at a small angle to each other, the channel 13 extending across the join of the limbs. During starting by raising the anodes and then lowering them to allow the mercury to return to the anodes, the volume of mercury in the channel 13 is in connection with the cathode and an arc is struck between this small volume and one of the two equal streams of mercury flowing to the anodes, the mercury in the channel quickly vaporizing. Short-circuits between the anodes are prevented. The tube may be of quartz with the channel 13 formed after the apparatus has been shaped.
