Magnetic instruments; diaphragms.-A sound producing apparatus comprises a main diaphragm 2 associated with a secondary diaphragm 6 through a narrow airchamber, and an open-ended resonator 7 of whistle-type located with one end close to the centre of the secondary diaphragm. The resonator if cylindrical is of length equal to an odd multiple of a quarter-wave length of the tone to be transmitted. It may, however, expand in exponential form as indicated by the dotted lines. The secondary diaphragm is of reduced width at the centre so that the air chamber is of conical form. With electromagnetic exciting means as shown, a condenser C serves for partial phase compensation and is of such value that the natural frequency of the electric circuit lies above that of the mechanical system. The frequency of the exciting alternator W lies between the two resonance peaks of the mechanical system. The diaphragms and resonator may be duplicated on either side of a central magnet, the coil of which is supported by special coil carriers secured to the sides of the casing.
