Magnetic instruments of the kind in which eddy currents produced in a membrane or diaphragm react with a magnetic field are so constructed that the eddy currents are distributed uniformly over the diaphragm, which moves bodily and without flexure. A sheet 5 of gold leaf or of gold leaf reinforced by cardboard rests upon a flat coil 4 connected with a battery and choke coil and a transmitter 1. Variations in the steady magnetic field cause eddy currents in the sheet 5 to cause it to vibrate. Several superposed sheets and coils may be used as shown in Fig. 3, so that the action of each is superposed on the other pneumatically. the coils being in series. The edges of the sheets and coils may be enclosed by a frame 8.
