Abstract
287,882. Cattaneo, G. March 28, 1927, [Convention date]. Mounting gear wheels on shafts; shaft couplings.-A gear drive is shown in Fig. 2 by which cam shafts O and N operating the valves of an internal-combustion engine may be finely adjusted on the differential or vernier principle independently of one another. A gear F is connected to the shaft O by a toothed coupling E having, say, 21 teeth, while gears F and G have, say, 20 and 21 teeth respectively. If the gear F be disengaged and advanced one tooth upon the gear G and the coupling E be shifted back one tooth, the angular adjustment of the shaft O is <1>/420 of a revolution. By having a second differential arrangement at H, it is possible to adjust the shaft O without affecting the adjustment of a shaft N driven from it. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) the differential vernier coupling shown in Fig., 1 was regarded as part of the invention. The Specification also comprised an arrangement of two such couplings arranged in series. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
