Abstract

287,401. Fairweather, H. G. C., (Selden Co.). Sept. 14, 1927. Ammonium vanadate.-A crude vanadate solution is subjected to oxudation, as with a halogen or a peroxide, to render impurities readily oomovable on subsequent treatment with, for instance, ammonia. The oxidation may take place in alkaline solution, or partly in alkaline and partly in acid solution. Prior to the oxidation step, impurities forming insoluble carbonates may be removed by addition of a soluble carbonate, and barium compounds may be removed by precipitation as sulphate. When arsenic or phosphorus is present, the oxidised alkaline solution, after removal of deposited impurities, is acadified, a magnesium compound is added, oxidation is completed and neutralisation effected with ammonia, the precipitated impurities, including magnesium ammonium phosphate or arsenate, being removed. The purified solution is treated with a solution of ammonium chloride previously freed from iron by treatment with sulphuretted hydrogen in presence of ammonia, and the precipitated ammonium vanadata is washed free from chlorides.
