Abstract

The removal of nickel and cadmium, and copper if present, from solutions of zinc salts is effected by treatment with zinc fume or "blue powder" at a raised temperature, for instance 80-100 DEG C., in the presence of a small proportion of free acid, such as 0.1 per cent or less. Additional acid may be added during the treatment to dissolve any basic zinc salts produced, or the zinc may be washed with acid to remove any basic salts deposited upon it. If copper is not present, it is introduced, for instance, as sulphate, or by adding copper carbonate ore to the zinc ore from which the solution is obtained. This facilitates the separation of the nickel. The purified solution may be freed from cobalt by the process described in Specification 138,948. Specifications 955/87 and 138,947 are also referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the zinc employed may be in other forms.
