Abstract

286,924. Stephens, A. J., (Dap-Motor Patent-Ges.). May 10, 1927. Movable-abutment type. - A rotary engine or pump comprising a group of circumferentially arranged continuously rotating cylinders with which co-operate a group of pistons which are alternately held stationary and moved through a distance corresponding to twice the stroke, is provided with means for independently locking the pistons to a stationary part of the machine to prevent motion in both directions of rotation during the stationary period, and with a positive mechanism for accelerating the pistons from a zero speed to a maximum and the decelerating to zero speed during the period of motion. The locking mechanism consists of a lever 6 pivoted on the engine frame with its two ends engaging cams 7, 8 on the cylinder and piston carriers 1, 2. The piston control mechanism may consist of an epicyclic gear with a connecting rod of automatically variable length as shown in Fig. 1, in which the position of a slide 19, carried by a pin 20 on the piston carrier 2, is varied along the connecting rod 14 by means of eccentrics 16 actuated by gear wheels 22, 18<a> the latter of which is moved by a linkage 18, 23 the arm 23 of which passes through a rocker 24 on the piston carrier 2 and has a pin 27 which engages a cam slot 26 fixed to the connecting rod 14. Figs. 7 and 8 show alternative mechanisms; in the first, the point A connection of the connecting rod 41 to the crank 44 of the epicyclic gearing is automatically varied by a cam groove 45 fixed to the cylinders in the second, the pistons are actuated by means of a pin 42 engaging a cam groove 45 formed in fly wheel member on the planet pinion of the epicyclic gear.
