Abstract

286,380. Thomson, S. G. Dec. 8,1926. Road and rail wheels.-A road wheel is detachably secured to rail wheel, the interengaging surfaces being disposed entirely within the rim of the rail wheel. The two wheels may be adapted to rotate together or independently. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the road wheel H has tongues 15 pressed out of its disc body to engage the web 4 of the rail wheel, and is secured by a spring-pressed pin 16 engaging one of a series of holes 19 in the threaded extension 5 of the rail wheel hub. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the road wheel is clamped against coned webs 36 on the rail wheel by a plate 34. The latter is jammed home by means of a hand-lever 32 actuating a bolt 24 having a cam-head 26 bearing on a cam-bed 28 in the rail wheel hub. To obtain a positive drive, set-screws may be passed through the road wheel into the rim of the rail wheel. Fig. 7 shows a modification in which the road wheel is screwed directly on to an extension of the rail wheel hub and locked by a cap-nut 56. Fig. 10 shows a pneumatic-tyred wheel H secured by a plate 72 and nuts 69, the fail wheel hub having driving-pins 82 engaging slots 81 in the road wheel hub. Fig. 18 shows a road wheel hub 107 screwed by a left-hand thread on to the rail wheel hub, the latter having an internal right-hand thread to receive a bolt 107a. The parts are locked by a pin 108 carried by the road wheel engaging a toothed flange on the bolt. The part 107 may be replaced by a separate flanged nut engaging the web of the road wheel.
