Impulse and reaction meters; regulating weight of moving parts, reducing; bearings arrangement of; replacement of internal parts, facilitating.-A rotary gas meter, shunted across an orifice or Venturi constriction in the gas main, comprises a turbine wheel 9, wholly or partially supported by a float 14, which drives a retarding fan 12 rotating in the turbine chamber. The float 14 is immersed in mercury contained in a removable cup 15 and is fitted with a jewel bearing 18 which rotates on a conical pin 19 carried by a casing bracket 20. The bearing 18 is mounted in a spring-pressed slide 17 to prevent damage. The upper bearing of the turbine wheel spindle 10 is provided with a jewel bearing 25. The counter wheel train is in part immersed in an oil bath and includes a magnetic coupling 26. At overload a valve closes the outlet from the wheel chamber. Cover plates 34 permit of access to the interior of the meter. The nozzles consist of tubes 37 removably mounted in nozzle plates 35 by means of a pin 38 engaging a bayonet slot in a tubular socket 36. Baffles 33 assist in the retarding action. Different orifices may be used for different maximum flows or an adjustable butterfly valve may be used.
