Hasp fastenings for trunks and like containers of variable capacity comprise means, independent of the dog-ear movement of the hasp member, for securing the telescopic members by a catch mechanism, the engagement of which is governed by a spring-pressed secondary slide carried by the main slide and having a heel-piece adapted for engagement with a fixed abutment on the receptacle. The hasp d is carried by a worm slide b adapted to telescope in a box-like guide a secured to the cover c, and a secondary slide member g is provided. The member g is formed with a heel-piece g<3> adapted to abut against the lock i and, at the other end, with an inclined part g' to which is connected a compression spring g<2> that abuts against the end of the worm slide b. The slide b carries a catch h with a spring h<2> to press it into engagement with a rack a' of the outer casing a. The catch has also an inclined part h<3> for engagement with the inclined part g<1> of the part g. When the cover is closed, the heel piece g' of the member g engages the lock casing i and the slide g is moved upwardly against the spring g<2>. The spring h<2> is then free to press the detent h<1> into engagement with the rack teeth a<1>. On the case being opened, the spring g<2> returns the slide g and the incline g' is pressed against the incline h<3> of the catch, disengaging the detent h' from the rack; the extensible fastening may then be readjusted.
