Abstract

285,140. Mailõnder, W. Nov. 10, 1926. Inking-apparatus.-In a rotary intaglio printing- machine employing a tensioned printing-plate, means are provided to remove the strip of colour remaining on the plate after the ordinary scraper is lifted, to prevent accumulation of colour in the cylinder gap containing the plate-tensioning devices. In one form, Fig. 1, the colour-removing means consists of a suction device 5 arranged adjacent to the scraper 4 at the bottom portion of the printing-cylinder and carried by a pivoted arm 5<1> which is actuated by a cam 8 and roller 9 to cause the suction device 5 to engage the plate just before the scraper 4 is removed from the plate and to remain in operative position until just after the scraper 4 is again brought into contact with the plate. When desired the device 5 may be turned down into a trough 10 to be cleaned. The colour-applying roller 11 normally runs in contact with a roller 13 partly immersed in a colour trough 12 and is carried by arms 14 pivoted about the arms of the roller 13 and actuated by a cam 16 and roller 17<1> to apply colour to the design-bearing portion of the plate. By swinging the arms 14 so that the roller 11 is supported on a wedge 17, the roller may be retained out of contact with the cylinder 1. A pair of hooks 21 movable transversely of the machine on rails 22 are provided to facilitate removal of the roller 11 from the machine. In modifications the suction device and scraper 4 are combined into a single unit, the action of the suction device being timed by a cam-actuated valve. In the form shown in Fig. 7, the inkremoving means consists of a stripping-roller 24 having a surface of brass or other non-porous material moving in the opposite direction to the surface of the cylinder at the line of contact. The roller is timed to act in a similar manner to the suction device 5. The colour removed by the roller 24 is stripped therefrom by a doctor 30 and led to a trough 31. A stripping-plate 33 with upstanding side-edges is also provided to conduct colour from the scraper 4 to the trough 12.
