[Class 100 (ii)] Inking-apparatus.-In an inking-apparatus for a rotary intaglio printing-machine of the kind in which an immersed roller 1 is arranged just out of contact with the printing-surface 6 which is separated by a film of ink from the roller 1, the supply of ink to the roller 1 is controlled by means operated by the machine in such a way that the film is used up just as the last portion of the printing-surface passes the roller 1. This may be effected by a scraper 13 or a roller which is normally kept raised from the roller 1 by means of an adjustable cam 22, a lever 23, and a link 25 having an adjustable connection with a lever arm 26 on the shaft of a cam 27 adapted to act on a roller 28 of a lever arm 29 on the shaft 17 carrying the holder 16 of the scraper 13. The shaft 17 is mounted in lever arms 4. The cam 22 and the adjustable connection 30, 31, 32 are set so as to cause the scraper 13 to descend and cut off or restrict the flow of ink so as to cause the film of ink to be used up when the end of the printing-plate passes the roller 1. A screw 21 engaging a stop 20 on the holder 16 limits the inward position of the scraper 13. The roller 1 is mounted in levers 4 pivoted about a shaft 7 and pressed by springs 19 into contact with a hand-operated cam 8 which can be set so as to move the roller 1 out of contact with the printing surface. The cam 8 contacts with a screw 11 which enables the thickness of the ink film to be adjusted. The scraper 13 is arranged in such manner that it does not obscure the visibility of the inking- zone 12, and is downwardly inclined in an outward direction and co-operates with a gutter 15 to guide excess ink back to the trough 2. Instead of controlling the supply of ink to the plate by means of scraper devices, the feed roller 1 may be driven by variable gearing which causes the roller to be slowed down or stopped before the plate passes off the roller and the accumulation of ink is thus used up.
