Abstract

270,137. Hill, J. B. Aug. 4, 1926. Inking-apparatus. - In rotary printing - presses wherein ink-distributing rollers disposed between the inking-rollers and the printing-cylinder consist of alternate metal and composition rollers with their surfaces in contact, the ink is removed from all of the rollers by a sharp-edged blade which is brought into approximately tangential contact with one of tho metal rollers, the ink supply being then cut off and the train of rollers rotated rapidly so that the ink is transmitted from the whole train to the roller co-operating with the ink-removing blade. As shown in Fig. 1 two independent saries of ink-distributing rollers, each consisting of smooth-faced metal rollers 12 alternating with composition rollers 13, convey ink, which is supplied to the top rollers 12, to a cylinder 11 on which printing types or plates are mounted, each series of rollers being provided with the ink-removing devices. The two endbearing bosses 15, Fig. 2, of one of the metal rollers 12 each carry a collar 14 which is adjustably secured by a screw 16 and carries a pivoted arcuate arm 17, the outer ends of the two arms 17 forming supports for a flat plate 19 extending between them adjacent to the surface of the metal roller. The blade 24 is mounted upon the upper surface of the plate 19, with its edge adjacent to the metal roller, and is held thereon by a top plate 27 secured by screws 28, the blade preferably being provided with a series of notches through which the screws extend into the plate 19. The position of the blade relatively to its associated metal roller is adjusted by providing one end of the plate 19 with a lug 20, Fig. 3, which has two or more holes to receive a pin 23 passed through a hole in a lug 22 provided on the fixed collar 14. A fine adjustment of the blade is provided by a series of set screws 29, Fig. 7, located in screw-threaded openings formed partly in each of the plates 19, 27, the inner ends of the screws being in contact with the rear edge of the blade 24, thereby enabling it to be adjusted after slackening its clamping screws 28. The curved arms 17 support a trough 31, Fig. 1, suspended beneath the rear lower edge of the plate 19, so that the ink removed by the blade falls therein after flowing laterally in both directions along the upper edge of the plate 27 and over the ends of the blade. In a modification, Fig. 9, arms 34 mounted on collars 32 adjustably secured to the bearings of one of the distributing-rollers provide end supports for a metal roller 35 adapted to be placed into contact with one of the composition rollers 13. The ink-removing blade 38 is supported on an arm 37 pivoted upon a lug 36 on the arm 34, and may be supported either in or out of contact with the roller 35 by inserting a pin 40 through one of two holes in a lug 39 on the arm 37 to engage a hole at the extremity of the arm 34.
