The maid object of this invention is to make photogravure printing possible on a large andcommcrcial scale, such as for art and newspaper supplement work, and to en able sheets to be printed, which can then afterward 'be printed again in different colors in perfect register with the photo gravure. Other objects will appear as the specification proceeds.
The invention consists of the hereinafter described features of construction, combination of parts and arrangement of elements.
In the accompanying drawings the invention is embodied in a concrete and preferred form, but changes may of course be made without departing from the legitimate and intended scope of the claims.
In the said drawings Figure 1 is a general side elevation ofa machine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view principally of the form cylinder, inking and wiping mechanisms.

Adjacent to the feedboard are located the usual front gages 8. The impression cylinder is provided with rm ir pression surface 9, adjacent to. which are suitable sheet taking devices such as the grippers 10. These grippots, as'well as the usual overlay tightening device 11, are located in the two gaps 12 which bound the impression surface 9. suitable tripping mechanism 1 is provided whereby the impression c \'lindcr can be tripped with reference to the plate cylinder, and suitable means, as the screws l-t, are

Theplate cylinder is preferably located in frontof the impression cylinder and the delivery mechanism is preferably located in the plate cylinder. The plate cylinder-is provided with two gaps 15 (only one of which is shown) which bound the plate surface of the cylinder in a manner similar face of the impression cylinder. The -remainder of the surface of the plate cylinder is. preferably turned down below tlle'pit'z'h circumference of the cylinder in a well known manner. In the gaps 15 are located the pivoted clamps 16 which hold the ends of the intaglio plate 17. The tension under which the plate is held can be varied by means of the adjustable screw 18. It-will be noticed that the end 15) of the intaglio plate 17 Where it is held by the clamp 16 is bent inward below the sprfacc of the cylinof rotation ofthe ountain roller by means of the arms 25. It. is caused to vibrate into and out of contact with the plate on the plate cylinder by means of the cams 26. connections 27 and gab hook 28. i Said gab hook engages a pin 29 carried by the arm of the ductor roller, and this arm also carries a sector 30 engaging with 2. corresponding sector 31, mounted on the shaft'32 which extends to the other side of the machine and operates the arm 25 on that side. The cams 26 are adjustable circumferentially with respect to each other by means' of the slots 38 front of impression cylinder and underneath to the gaps 12bounding the impression surpivoted on a center co-axial with the center employed to vary the pressure of the imder, and that the top of the clamp 16 is i and bolts ill so as to vary the length of time the ductor roller is in contact with the plate 1.7 and thus'varying the supply of ink. The
parts are so timed, however, that the ductor roller will supply ink to the plate '17 only, and not on the blank space of the plate cylinder.
The wiping mechanism consists, in this instance, of a blade set at an angle to the plate cvlinder, which blade is supported in the pivoted holder 36. The blade is held up against the cylinder by means of the springs 37 acting through the arms 38. The amount of this pressure is regulated by means of the threadtal screws 39. The blade is preft-rablv-nnmrd away from the cylinder by means of the cam 40 acting on the cam lever ll. The cam lever ll has an arm 42 adjustable by means of the screw l3 which contacts with the stop lever 4d of the blade holder 36. This causes the blade to come incontact with the printing plate and to be raised oil the blank portion of the cylinder. The screw controls the amount of pressure of the blade against the cylinder. The angle of the blade in relation to the plate on the cylinder is determined by moving the slide 45, which carries holder 36, by mea s of screw 46. The blade need not, howeve be moved toward and away from the cylinder.

This cam is mounted on a shaft. making one revolution for each revolution of the plate cylinder and the cam 57 is shaped to cause the auxiliary wiping blade 33 to remain out of contact with the printing plate except at the moment the tail end lit-of the printing plate is passing when the auxiliary wiping blade 53 is caused to give the plate a short quick 'wipe, thus preventing the accumulation of an excessive amount of ink on the edge of The surplus ink IS gathered ill the pan 58. 1
The various parts such as ink fountains, fountain rollers, ductor roller, doctor blade, auxiliary blade, drip pan, etc, are all preferably easily able.
The sheets being printed are fed from the fcedboard to the feed gages and are taken as usual in sheet feed machines by the grippers in impression cylinder. After printing, the sheet is transferred in chains 59 which pass over sprockets 60 and 61. The diameter of the sprockets 60 being preferably equal to the impression cylinder, the shaft in which the sprockets are mounted is geared to make the same number of revolutions as the plate and impression cylinder.
The chains 59 are provided with grippers 62 which deposit the sheet with the printed side up in front of the impression cylinder and underneath the plate cylinder on the delivery board 63. The grippers 62 are opened by suitable cams.
'The impression cylinder 2 is preferably mounted insliding box 64: sliding'lin the ways 65 of the frame. The springs 66 normally tend to move the impression cylinder away from the plate cylinder. Mounted in the box 64: is a rockshaft 67 carrying the lever 68 connected to the tripping device 13. G9 is a cap, closing the ways 65, provided with a sliding member 70. Interposed between this sliding member 70 and trockshaft (i7 is a link 71 forming with lever (38 a toggle. The screw 14L is tapped into cap 69 and adjusts the sliding member 70.
What is claimed, is:
' 1. In a rotary intaglio printing machine,
a form cylinder, an intaglio plate on said cylinder extending over a distance less than the entire surface of the cylinder, means for supplying ink to said plate, means for wipling said plate after inking the same, an an auxiliary Wlfittg mechanism for wiping the tail end 0 the plate only.
In a rotary intagliqprinting machine, a form cylinder, an intaglio plate on said cylinder extending over a distance less than the entire surface of the cylinder, means for clamping said plate onto'the cylinder located below the surfa e of the same, causing the tail end of the plate to extend be low the surface, means for applying ink to said plate, means for wiping that part of the plate which is on the circumference of the cylinder, and an auxiliary wiping mechanism for wiping the depressed tail end of the plate only. 3.- A printing machine comprising: an impression cylinder, a plate cylinder located in front of the impression cylinder and somewhat higher than the latter, a delivery mechanism arranged in front otthe impression cylinder and below the) latterand underneath the plate cylinder, an inking apparatus forthe plate cylinder disposed accessible and quickly remow livery mechanism and between the impression cylinder and inking apparatus.
4.-.'A sheet fed rotary intaglio printing machine comprising: an impression cylinder making one revolution to each impression, a plate cylinder also making one revolution to each impression, an intaglio plate coverin a portion of the plate cylinder onl ,in 'ng means for inking the plate after eac impression, means for moving said inking means' toward and away from the plate cylinder once to each revolution so as not tocontact that portion of the plate cylinder not occupied by the plate, means for wiping theplate after each inking and before the next impression, and means for moving said wiping means toward and awa from the plate cylinder once to each revo ution so as not to contact that portion of the plate cylinder not occu ied by the plate.
5. A-sheet fe rotary intaglio rinting machine comprising: a plate cylin er mak ing one revolution to each impression, an inta lio printing plate coverin a portion of t e plate cylinder only, inking means for inking the, plate after each impression, means for moving the said inking means towardand away from the plate cylinder once to each revolution so as not to contact that portion ofthe cylinder not occupied by the plate, a doctor lade for wiping the plate after each inking and before the next impression, means for moving said doctor lade toward and away from the plate cylinder once to each revolution so as not to. contact with that portion of the plate cylindernot occupied y the plate, and an impression cylinder coacting with the plate cylinder.
