Inking-apparatus.-A device for applying ink to the inking-rollers of cancelling or postmarking machines comprises an ink trough, an inksupplying roller rotatably mounted above the trough, means for carrying ink from the trough to the roller, another roller for distributing ink rotatably mounted alongside the first roller, and a lever for temporarily supporting the inking- roller when detached from the cancelling &c. machine, the lever being so mounted that the inking-roller may be brought into contact with the ink-supply roller to receive a charge of ink and then with the distributing-roller for distributing the ink evenly. In the arrangement shown, the supply roller 7 receives ink from the trough 1 by means of an endless chain or band 10. and is mounted together with the distributing- roller 8 on a spindle 6, rotatable by a handle 5. The lever 16 is mounted on a spindle 14, extending between turned-over flanges 12, 13 of a vertical plate 11, and is provided with a pin 18 to receive the inking-roller 19 of the cancelling- machne. The lever 16 is slidable along the spindle 14 to bring the roller 19 into contact with either of the rollers 7 or 8, sleeves 23, 24 being provided on the lever to limit its movement to these positions. Stops 21, 22 prevent the lever falling down the roller 19 is removed, and splashing of ink is avoided by a guard 25.
