Abstract

1,088,525. Printing-apparatus. ADOLPH GOTTSCHO Inc. March 29, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 13297/65. Heading B6C. Apparatus for printing on curved articles such as cans 12a, 12b moving along a conveyer surface 14 comprises a stationary printing surface supported on a generally cylindrical body 38 with its operative face substantially coplanar with the surface 14, a star wheel 52 adapted to be rotated by the cans and including a pair of side members 54 rotatably mounted on the body axis and supporting a plurality of forme inking rollers 60, and means for supplying ink to the rollers as they are moved bodily through a closed path. The printing surface is located in a recess in the body 38, Fig. 3 (not shown), and is resiliently mounted by means of springs 32. The surface 14 may be horizontal, vertical, or inclined and the cans are maintained in contact therewith and/or are rotated by belts 22. The rollers 60 are urged radially into contact with the body 38 by springs 66 and the curved body surfaces between the printing surface and the lower portion of the body may act as distributing surfaces. Said surfaces may be of rubber &c. The rollers 60 may be inked by a micro-porous resinous pad impregnated with ink &c. and located in a recess in the lower surface of the body 38, Fig. 3 (not shown), or by a planar or concave pad, Fig. 5 (not shown), resiliently mounted below the lower flat or cylindrically curved surface of the body 38 and supplied with ink from a reservoir by a flexible wick.
